For my Final in Narrative Image, I decided to create a triptych on the themes of Life, Death, and Rebirth. For each panel, I wrote a piece of prose. This is all LOADED with symbolism, and I don't even want to begin to deliver a dissertation on it here. I figure these sorts of images are more enjoyable for people when they can come to their own conclusions about the symbolism and narrative, anyhow :)

I'm currently in a class titled Narrative Image. As you probably gathered from the name, it is a creative writing/illustrating for narratives class.

For me, writing is like dancing. I'm no good at it, but it's fun for me regardless. My first project was to create a piece of flash fiction and illustrate for it. I decided to revise an earlier narrative + illustration that I created. Previously called Black Planet, I decided to go with something even more pretentious this time around: Domos Aidaou. The main difference is that I added a narrator and turned it into an actual narrative as opposed to the description of a scene with more words than necessary. I decided to name the narrator after a favorite musician of mine who recently passed away.

This time around with the illustrations, I decided to create an Audubon-esque illustration of some mutated critters, as the narrator was an old biologist. I think these turned out pretty sweet.

Alright, if you are interested, here is a bit 'o flash fiction, written by me:

Domos Aidaou

It has been at least a month since I last spoke with another person, and I fear that these might be the last words ever written. It is my hope that this record may be found after my death by some sort of cosmic travelers. In this, my last journal entry, I will tell the story of the end of humanity.

Throughout the whole of our existence, humanity has been obsessed with the end of the world. Despite this careful study of eschatology, from every possible contingency, we brought about our own demise. We were thwarted by our own sentience: our attempt to achieve god-hood with mastery over the microbe, the atom, the elements and nature. From every corner of the globe it was the same: taring away at each other like rats, fighting over life sustaining resources, all hoarded by the upper rungs of society. The lower classes were always lost in the fray. A dark alchemy of industrial contamination, global-scale murder, and the devouring of resources could not be tempered by the last weak efforts of the few toward preservation. Epidemics emerged, the numbers of the dead metastasized like the sicknesses in their bodies. Eco-systems died out and eliminated all sources of food. Desperate wars over the last farmlands and water-sources killed off the majority. In the end, the upper echelons of society were able to buy themselves the luxury of dying last.

I am writing this from an old cabin I had the fortune to discover deep in the woods. I found it when I fled from the city. It is an oddly comforting place. I know that it is just as saturated with radiation as everything else, but the blanket of vegetation that covers it provides a sort of imagined barrier. I feel removed from that contaminated wilderness. The biologist in me yearns to spend my final days wandering this strange world, but I can not find the strength to stand.

A ghostly terrain roles out from the mists, like a real Domos Aidaou. For now the only stirring in this world is the movement of contaminated flora and fauna. The trees hum with a poisonous bioluminescence. Scurrying forth from many generations of mutation, the cacophony of a thousand gnarled creatures can be heard in the darkness. The occasional darting retina can be spied by lurking predators in between glowing branches and leaves. The steaming and hissing of a once toxic steam now gently licks the faces of the horrid creatures and lurching tendrils as they reach into the water for nourishment.

Looking at the tumors in my hands that have formed within days, I can not imagine any other humans could have survived this. I suppose the pendulum always swings. For centuries we were all so worried about the end, we forgot that the planet does not need humans to endure. Though ravished through the ages by predatory giants – from the dinosaurs to humanity – Nature will not be victimized. She will always prevail. I pray that someday the ancient remains of this crumbling domicile will be discovered and this journal within it, lest humanity forever be forgotten with the death of human consciousness.

My final project in my Oil Painting class was to create a master copy, and a response to that copy. As an illustrator, I feel that my illustrations rely on my painting, and as an illustrator of largely mythological themes, I feel largely influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites.

I chose to create a master copy of Gather Ye Rosebuds while Ye May by John William Waterhouse. It's not my favorite Waterhouse painting, but I felt that it was simple enough to provide for a good study, and I am really in love with the composition and color. Here is a study I did before beginning the oil painting:

I decided to create a response in the manor of Waterhouse. This is because I have been really influenced by his style of painting: Strong women, mythological subject matter, all painted in a naturalistic yet almost impressionistic fashion.

I also wanted to address the subject matter of this specific painting. While Waterhouse is known for the strong women and mythological femme-fatales in his paintings, Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May was inspired by this poem :

TO THE VIRGINS, TO MAKE MUCH OF TIME.

As a feminist, naturally this makes me cringe. I wanted my response to be similar in composition but way more empowering. I chose my dear friend Lissy to model for me. She is a modern Priestess of Isis. Here was a study I painted for this piece:

I decided to add a more esoteric element to the piece (to imply that the subject knows something you don't) I added hieroglyphs to the background. Here are a few images of the final piece:

One of my assignments for Illustration Studio was to create a half-page, magazine illustration for an article about Henry Molaison. I did some research on Henry Molaison, and the images that stuck with me were the descriptions of him in his courtyard, watching trains with his bunny and his dog. Here was my first ideation comp:

The Transformation of an Illustration

For my Illustration Studio final, I was assigned to create an anti-smoking PSA. This was an interesting and weird assignment for me, a smoker.

I decided to build the PSA around the amount of money the government receives annually from cigarette sales. With US government symbolism and my own style in mind, I initially planned for the PSA to be rife with Masonic symbolism and to look very sinister. Here are a few of my ideations from that point:

I thought that cigarettey pillars with cancerous mouths would make a nice touch to the imagery

I brought these ideas to my Professor, and he said that they were too esoteric. I reworked my ideas into something more broad (I HATE doing that) and came up with this basic composition:

I wanted a insignia to be the main image. I reworked this composition (it felt too boxy), scanned the ink drawing I made of the Eagle seal, added some texture, designed the text, then put it all together and colored it in Photoshop. He is the final result:

Hello All! Happy Yule :)

Finally getting around to updating here. It's been a pretty full semester, and I'm excited to show you what I've come up with.

I finally moved into a place of my own where I can actually be stationary for the next few years! This is a huge relief, and should also be conducive for keeping current with this blog (I now have a scanner at my disposal.) Alright, I shall commence with the updates. I'll start with a better scan of my Scelerophobia illustration. Enjoy :)

My first big illustration assignment was to illustrate a phobia. I chose Scelerophobia. We started the project out with ideations. I knew that I was going to create something of an image montage, so I churned out a bunch of compositions for the elements of my main piece out in my sketchbook:

I then created the sketch for the actual composition:

Then the final piece, composed with goauche and color pencils. I tried to figure out how to work the contrast in this image to make the female the obvious focal point. I decided to make the images that represent the phobia as a transparent, make-believe membrane that was encroaching on her reality. This worked out pretty nicely as far as balancing out the contrast. And I'm happy to report that I finally found a place for Albert Fish in my artwork. Even the Zodiac!

Cimaruta, the original Lucky Charms

YES, that entendre was doublé ! Anyway, Cimarutas, or Cima di Ruta (sprig of rue) are traditional Italian folk-charms which possibly originate all the way back to the Etruscans. They are pendants, usually silver, and the folk tradition is to place them where one would want protection (baby’s cradle, hung in a doorway, worn as a necklace etc.) They are always a sprig of rue with charms/symbols hung from the branches. The symbols are often a mixture of Pagan and Catholic motifs.

I just discovered these things and thought they were neat, so I drew one.

Emotional Masochism

Just recently I was revisiting my old obsession with serial killers. For years I haven't had the stomach to think about this sort of thing. I watched a documentary about Albert Fish the other day, and it disturbed me so greatly that I decided I wanted to make an art piece about it. I want to revisit the experiments I've done in the past with mixed-media and merge those aesthetics with graphic art skills I have garnered over the last year.

My painting final serves two functions. As I wrote up in my final proposal, I wanted to create a fantasy illustration, something versatile that could be used for calendars, gaming books, or even books on witchcraft (like a John William Waterhouse painting.) These are the markets I want to get into as an illustrator. The primary reason I created this painting was as a devotional painting to Brighid, as I have certainly been blessed with inspiration, productivity, and skill this first year at art school.

For reference I set up a photoshoot with my friend Coleen. Have I mentioned yet that my friends are good sports? She was willing to let me dress her up and stand by a fire-pot in her backyard for an hour while I took pictures of her in the cold.

p.s. Coleen doesn't really have horns.

I was able to superimpose this image over a woodsy background, the lighting was challenging but I pulled it off.

I was stoked that I pulled off the fire-pot as well.

We all did one Master's Study in my Illustration Painting class, in other words, choosing a painting by an artist we admire and recreating it with goauche. I chose Morganna Le Fay by Brian Froud. Brian Froud is definitely an artist who I want to emanate in my paintings.

The Three Allegories of Beauty, graphite and charcoal

For the our final in Drawing II, each student had to create some giant project that related to the human figure. Their were 3 general themes to choose from: the human body as a machine, the human body relating to a grander concept, or using parts of the body to create the drawing final. For my project I created “The Three Allegories of Beauty.”

For reference, I took photos of my friends Courtney and Erin, and I modeled for the 3rd allegory. I sketched out the infrastructure of each piece with graphite. I enhanced the shadows of the compositions with charcoal. The modeling in the drawings consists of blended graphite and charcoal, as well as stippling and crosshatching to create different texture throughout the composition. These were all drawn on 3 sheets of white 22x30 drawing paper.

There are a number of artists, traditional and contemporary, that have influenced the artistic decisions I made with this project. Throughout history, in the middle-ages especially, people used allegories as a solution to visually represent abstract concepts. I decided to use allegories because they are traditionally female figures, and this works perfectly as the project is about female body-issues. Another artist that inspired me during this project (and in general) is Caravaggio. I am inspired by Caravaggio’s intense use of subject matter, but also his use of tenebrism. The last artist that inspires me (in general as well as in context of this project) is Kiki Smith. Kiki Smith is a sculptor whose work is all about the human figure. She works in themes of women’s issues and makes several references to mythology and folklore to further contextualize her sculptures.

Because this piece had so many medieval elements, I wanted to make it a traditional triptych. Because I felt like these figures were on display, almost like a freak-show, I gave them a more Victorian appearance and the typography followed suit.

Maid, the melancholy Woman-Child. This allegory is my favorite aesthetically as well as conceptually, as it disturbs me the most. Courtney was so perfect for this.

Matrona, the proverbial Xanax Soccer-Mom. It was hard to make Erin looked fucked up at all, as she is so beautiful.

Matriarch, the discarded Hag. Our biology tells us that women are no longer needed when they are no longer fertile.

I actually modeled for this one. I drew a bunch of lines on my face, and I looked like Yoda when I was done. Yoda in a severe corset.

The Journeys Project

This was my favorite assignment in Illustration Word and Image. We were to make up an explorer and illustrate/document their journey. We had to depict where they went, who they met, what they found etc. and create an illustrated book around this story.
I decided to make a Celtic children's story: The Journey of Sionann Donnelly. This decision was inspired by a book I recently read, The Red-Haired Girl from the Bog by Patricia Monaghan.

I made this one another accordion book. I made the cover out of illustration board and book cloth. The image on the cover (drawn with colored pencils) was an homage to one of my favorite motifs from history, The Three Hares. I snuck them in throughout the book.

Sionann flies home, and when she unpacks her things, she finds a book that tells the tale of her journey.

There's a little hidden raven in every image, as Ériu's raven spies on Sionann throughout the story.

For this assignment, we were to chose an artist that we liked that worked a lot with the figure. We were then supposed to create a self portrait in the style of this artist. Immediately I thought "Great, I'll do Giger." This turned out to be hilarious. My classmates all chose more conventional artists, demonstrating their amazing skills at rendering life-like portraits. I was the only one, it seems, that decided to portray themselves through the aesthetics of some creepy surrealist.

Trying to complete this piece in a timely fashion with charcoal was a giant pain in the ass. I tried my best to mimic the airbrush texture with charcoal and conte. I wish I had more time to execute this piece, as there is so much more detail that I would have liked to put in it, as well as more time to render the details of the textures. I salute you, Hans Rudolf Giger. You are a freakin' genius.

For this assignment we had to bring in a piece of cardboard to class and paint a portrait of one of our classmates. We had to use cardboard as it forces you to paint really thick and it also starts you off with a mid-tone, forcing you to create a full value scale in the painting. I was lucky enough to paint my friend, Danni, who is lovely.

Personal Map

ARGH! I can't get a good image of this assignment to save my life for some reason. Anyway, for Illustration Word and Image we were given the assignment to create a personal map/self portrait. I will do my best to describe this project, as all the images I have suck. (In addition to photoshop, I need access to a good camera.)

I drew a map of the pacific northwest, where I have always lived. I wanted to the map to have a Tolkeinesque feel, but with my own cartoony line quality so it didn't appear as if it wanted to be taken too seriously. In acknowledgment to my habit of romanticising everything just to deal with mundane reality, I renamed various important locations to sound like something from a D&D campaign. They all have their own little map symbols too.

Valerie Herron was born and raised in the Newakum Hillfort overlooking the Land of Sinking Sands. She spent many years swirling around in the Emerald Vortex until it transported her to the Port City of the Elves. She currently lives in the Witches' Castle and studies at the Persephone-Nyx Collegeum of Artisans where she is a neophyte scribe and painter. She plans to one day journey to the Golden City of Saint Francis to further matriculate and eventually explode in a supernova of Illustrative glory.

I drew a simple but accurate portrait of myself. I was trying to think of how I could make it a little more iconic, so I drew a heron circling around my head. I actually really like this image, and I'm toying with the idea of using it on my business cards.

Perspective Still Life

The assignment was to create a composition that displayed a still life that contained some element of figure within it, and showing some level of atmospheric perspective.

Last Spring, I found a statue of Pan in the dumpster outside the art department at Clark College. Made out of plaster, he was painted to look like bronze and his head had apparently busted off. I instantly fell in love with this statue, and I've displayed him in my room ever since.

I made this drawing as a tribute to my statue. I drew him from a very low angle as an art challenge. I wanted him to be high in the composition, as to suggest his importance, but I wanted to see if I could successfully convey that he was merely a small object drawn from close up. I drew all this on craft paper, which gave me a mid-tone to start with. I rendered this with white and black Conté crayons.

Portrait of an Artist: Amanda F. Palmer

For this assignment, we were supposed to create a portrait of an artist, preferably someone we are inspired by. I chose Amanda Palmer, as her music has been very important to me since I started school. I wanted to create a pretty, naturalistic portrait of Amanda, but I wanted to add a slight collage element to the piece.

I painted Amanda and her keyboard on good drawing paper, cut them out with an exacto blade, created the background with goauche, wrote the typography with white color pencil, and attached it all together. Unfortunately, I didn't realize until I wrote down the second stanza of "Astronaut" that I wrote it in the incorrect order. Oh well, I will fix this in photoshop before I send this off to Amanda Palmer :)

In-Class Still Life

This was a still life in my painting class that we spent about 3 class periods working on. The collection of objects was set up in the center of the room, the students all in a circle facing it, so everyone was rending it from a different angle. My class found the composition of my painting especially amusing, affectionately naming it "Mount Junk." So far, this is the best painting I have done as far as rendering different textures with paint is concerned. It was even hung up in the Illustration building for the semester. Aren't I a winner.

This assignment was to set up a still life, lit by candle to create dramatic, chiaroscuro values. I then laid a ground layer of thick charcoal, and crated the image by using different erasers to create the mid and light tones in the composition. I used a better drawing paper this assignment (the paper we get in the foundation package at PNCA sucks!) I really like the witchy vibe that the dramatic lighting and subject matter lends to this piece.

The Joanie B. Titles

This was an interesting project. It was apparently inspired by a personal friend of my Professor's, art rep Joanie Berstien. When artists contact her asking for representation, she sends them a list of phrases that they are to create illustrations for so she can get a sense of their work. This is a long list of clichés, things such as "Relax and Rejuvinate" and "Love and War." We were supposed to choose a few items from this list to illustrate. The point was that we would all come up with different ways to illustrate the same ideas. Much like the Commons assignment, this assignment was also challenging for me. I felt way out of my element. But I must say, I was pretty happy with the results.

Both sides of my family are from Sonoma County. People generally think of Sonoma County and they think of all the beautiful vineyards, all the rich countryside. My family is from the other side of the tracks, full of Hillbillies, Hippies, and Ghetto. Poverty, crime, and addiction problems everywhere. So this was a little homage to my roots.

Self portrait! I managed to make myself look FREAKIN' CRAZY. But I don't know, here's an actual photo, what do you think?

I was pretty happy with how this painting turned out. At this point I believe it shows that I am comprehending how to render greater value in skin tones with goauche. Good job, me.

Murder Mystery Still Life

For this assignment we were to set up a still life at home that looked like the scene of a murder, and then reproduce it in a drawing medium naturalistically.

I threw stuff about in my room and set up the still life. I don't actually own a severed head, so I just had to wing it without reference. Same with the blood. I rendered the still life on 18"x24" drawing paper with washes of ink. I wanted it to look a bit awkward, so I basically painted the image with indian ink and water. The image vacillates between naturallistic and stylized, which I like.

This assignment was to create a painting from one photo-reference using goauche thickly. My roommate Kelli was so awesome as to let me dress her up and take a photo-shoot of her for this assignment.

This assignment was a good learning experience for me. I believe I had mentioned before that before this year, I have never taken a formal painting class. This was the first painting I have created working with the figure and using goauche this thick. I think I did a pretty nice job. My only big criticism would be the lack of value in the face, making it flat compared to the rest of the texture in the composition. This is how we learn :)

This illustration was for Illustration Word and Image. The assignment was to draw the commons at PNCA from observation, then take on of the model drawings we had down from class and superimpose it in the commons drawing. Then we were to tie it all together, with color and/or text if necessary to create a complete illustration. I found this assignment especially challenging as it is so far from the stuff that I normally due. Thankfully I have few issues drawing from observation.

To make a long story short, I drew the commons, drew the model, used light washes of gouache for color, inked in all of the contours, and then tied all of the empty spaces together by putting text over them.

The text is totally irrelevant, I used the poem The Human Abstract by William Blake, and then as an extra something I wrote "BEESTICKS: what secrets do you hold?" in the background.

Work from my sketchbook was integral to my curriculum this semester. Up until this point, I mostly used my sketchbook to hash out compositional thumbnails for bigger pieces, practice through my own sketches of other people's work, and for general rough sketches. This semester I took Illustration Word and Image from sketchbook luminary Kurt Hollomon. It has been YEARS since I created any complete compositions of my own in my sketchbook, so I wanted to display here some of the pieces from my sketchbook this semester that I was especially happy with.

Holy Updates! aka Painting Final from Last Semester

Oh My God, this blog is waaaayyyy overdue to be updated. Professor Kurt Hollomon strongly disapproves!!!! Well, as per his suggestions, I will do my best to keep this thing current.

I will start this mad barrage of updating with my Illustration Painting Final from last semester. I know, that was last December, but I didn't get the thing back 'til February... and then I got busy. MOVING RIGHT ALONG!

I created a prototype of an illustrated bestiary, specifically about creatures from Anglo-American folklore.

This is an accordion book, the cover created from illustration board and book cloth. Each illustration was 4"x4", with a little description and background info next to each creature.

I believe the Jackalope needs no introduction. Fear him, he thirsts for your blood.

Ogopogo, the famous lake monster from British Colombia. For reference I used an image of an albino alligator and an image of a white eel.

And my favorite, the Wampus Cat. Obscure, cursed cat-woman from Native American mythology.

Don't Drink and Drive, Graphite and Ink

Latest Time-Art's monstrosity: We had to create a 2-page graphic novel spread. We had to create a narrative that involved someone getting drunk and deciding to drive, being warned not to drive drunk, doing it anyway, and dying. We also had to incorporate 3 different gutter-transitions.

So, here is my graphic novel, which I personally think should be handed out in pamphlets to kids. I threw this together last night, and I for transitions I used moment to moment, action to action, and a sweet non-sequetor.

Because I don't drink, I thought it would be funny (and maybe a bit predictable) to cast myself as the drunk driver. Not that this isn't like me when I used to drink. Really, it's why I had to stop. If I didn't, Ragnarok was imminent. You can thank me for your life by purchasing my art.

Backtracking a bit, here is the birthday present I made for my BFF/roomate, Courtney. Because she is a saintly friend, I decided to take it upon myself to canonize her with this Icon painting. I tried to capture the traditional Byzantine stylization of Icon paintings, being a mixture of classical modeling and medieval complete disregard of naturalization. Being a broke ho', I didn't bother trying to obtain any goldleaf. That's a acrylic gold background. Don't tell Courtney.

Black Planet

Eons ago, throughout the whole of their existence, humanity was obsessed with the end of the world. Despite this obsession they brought about their own demise. They were thwarted by their own sentience: their attempt to achieve god-hood with mastery over the microbe, the atom, the elements and nature. These creatures tore away at each other like rats, fighting over life sustaining resources, hoarded by the upper rungs of society. The lower classes were lost in the fray. All war-fodder: some used as soldiers, others helpless victims to these chess-games of global industry. A dark alchemy of industrial contamination, global-scale murder, and the devouring of resources could not be tempered by the last weak efforts of the few toward preservation. Epidemics emerged, the numbers of the dead metastasized like the sicknesses in their bodies. Eco-systems died out and eliminated all sources of food. Desperate wars over the last farmlands and water-sources killed off the majority. In the end, the upper echelon of society were able to buy themselves the luxury of dying last. But the world did not end.

A ghostly terrain roles out from the mists, like a real Domos Aidaou. The ancient remains of a domicile crumbles in this forest, ruins of a society forever forgotten with the death of human consciousness. For now the only stirring in this world is the movement of contaminated flora and fauna. The trees hum with a poisonous bioluminescence. Scurrying forth from many generations of mutation, the cacophony of a thousand gnarled creatures can be heard in the darkness. The occasional darting retina can be spied by lurking predators in between glowing branches and leaves. The steaming and hissing of a once toxic steam now gently licks the faces of the horrid creatures and lurching tendrils as they reach into the water for nourishment.

Throughout the eons, the pendulum swings. The world will never end. Though ravished through the ages by predatory giants – from the dinosaurs to humanity – Nature will not be victimized. She will always prevail.

A while back I went a day and a half without my meds. During this time, we did our first exercise in my Digital tools class: Create a self portrait in photoshop using only filters. One Geometric, one organic, and one combination of the two. These ended up being very apt representations of my state of self that day. Enjoy.

I have been working on the same project for 4 days straight. It is finally complete. I HAVE GIVEN BIRTH TO YGGDRASIL. This illustration is so fucking busy I fear it will give my classmates seizures. Honestly, I'm not too satisfied with the composition, I do believe that I will lose points due to it's busy-ness. But I love it when I don't think of it as an assignment. I love it even more when I imagine subjecting people on mushrooms to it. I had to put it away, as every time I look at it I notice something else that I want to tweak and realizing how endless I have made this project I collapse into a panic attack. Now that's good art.
